Prinsjesdag or ‘Prince’s Day’

The King officially opens parliamentary year.

Prince's Day

In the Netherlands, Budget Day is known as Prinsjesdag or ‘Prince’s Day’, and is held on the third Tuesday in September. On this day, the King delivers the Speech from the Throne, officially opening the parliamentary year. The King’s speech contains the government’s key plans for the year ahead.

The programme for Budget Day 2021 will be different this year due to measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Netherland (Dutch) Election 2025

On the 29th of October 2025 a general election will be held to vote for a new goverment. This is due to the PPV with drawing form the coalition due to disagreements over asylum policy, leading to Dick Schoof (Prime Minister) submitting the resignation of the cabinet.

Remembrance Day ceremony at Dam Square

The National 4 and 5 May Committee organises the Remembrance Day ceremony held at Dam Square in Amsterdam. The ceremony is attended by King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima and representatives of the government, victims of war and next-of-kin.

Canal in Amsterdam

Amsterdam, capital of the Netherlands, has more than one hundred kilometers of canals (grachten), about 90 islands and 1,500 bridges. The three main canals, dug in the 17th century during the Dutch Golden Age, form concentric belts around the city, known as the Grachtengordel.

The three main canals (Herengracht, Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht), dug in the 17th century during the Dutch Golden Age and form part of the original history of the city.
